Deb Powell Bio

With more than 30 years of experience with horses, I have been involved with all aspects of breeding and training horses.  I have worked specifically with breeding and showing Morgans and Arabians in both English and Western. I have started many horses, including handling youngsters from birth and bringing them along to be competitive.  My particular area of expertise is in working with the sport horse, dressage and eventing, as well as hunters and jumpers.  Not only have I trained horses in dressage, but also in eventing and hunters and jumpers, I have also had extensive experience in showing in these areas as well.  I am currently preparing my young thoroughbred mare for competition in eventing and dressage, and experiencing great success. My past experience allows me to work effectively with western and saddle seat through the intermediate levels.

My methods emphasize a two-way communication with the horse, allowing rather than forcing cooperation. It is a solid foundation in the basics will enable any horse to reach it’s full potential.  I have worked extensively with stallions, and problem horses. I also have experience with all breeds in both breed and open shows.  The rider’s position has a great influence the horse’s ability to perform; therefore, I emphasizes rider biomechanics in each lesson.  Combine a solid foundation of the basics for both horse and rider with an emphasis on proper biomechanics and you get a winning combination.

My education in in sports psychology, which enables me to work effectively with both timid riders experiencing confidence issues and bolder event-type personalities.  Learning to ride should be a positive, fun experience, where everyone is given a chance to experience success.  Setting goals for both rider and horse are important, as well as developing a safe environment for them.  Whether you are aiming at a pleasant, safe ride down the trail or competing at recognized shows, I can tailor a program that fits both you and your horse.  Each lesson should be fun and educational whatever your long or short terms goals may be.  My students include both recreational riders and successful competitors, and they all enjoy their lessons by expanding their knowledge of horse psychology, physiology and horsemanship.

In order to be an effective teacher and trainer, continuing education is essential, therefore I attend clinics and seminars on a regular basis.  Some highlights include train-the trainer seminars with:

  • Mary Wanless

  • Sandy Howard

  • Joanie Bolton

  • Ann Howard (registered physical therapist)
